Regional Strategic, Ltd. has calculated detailed estimates of livestock excrement by county in Iowa. There is also an analysis of what that excrement would be worth if properly captured, processed, and utilized. The four papers can be accessed at https://app.box.com/s/48cv7iy5lxv1jap9aftf0x56rh2rtyx3

Like most resources available to Americans, we fitter it away. Make it toxic as opposed to available input. Jesus we suck. Same with human waste. We use two very valuable resources, water and the waist and corrupt them both. Freaking ridiculous.

Thanks Nina!

As Chris Jones and others have pointed out, there is a lot of "spillage" that goes on that does not get characterized as "illegal". For example, over-application of manure waste with huge subsoil injectors, which often results in runoff to nearby streams OR which is quickly moved to streams and ditches by the abundant field tile network. Winter applications on frozen ground might be another example. The number of fields where injection can be used is often a factor of how far the CAFO is willing to transport the waste, and what farms/producers are willing to accept the manure.

Out of sight, out of mind!

My impression from living around several CAFOs in this area is that there is a lot of spillage and waste pumping that goes undetected and unreported. It seems like it is a large fish kill that normally triggers a spill complaint.

Thoughts?
